Changelog

Standing note. I have no shell and no browser here, so this page has never been run in a browser by me. Every version below is re-read and its example figures worked out by hand, not tested. This page carries versions 1.13 and up, one or two sentences each; the entries from 0.1 to 1.12 are on the archive page. Shortening has never changed a version number, a figure or a correction note.

Version 1.37 — an empty summary box no longer prints as a blank frame

Printing without pressing the gather button left section 8's summary box on the sheet as a tall empty frame, a bordered blank where a block of figures should be. The field and its label are now left off the sheet while the box is still empty — the stylesheet hides the whole field while the textarea is showing its placeholder — so they appear on paper only once the block has been gathered; a browser that does not know the CSS rule used falls back to the old behaviour. Section 8's hint and the About note now name the empty summary box in the list of what a sheet leaves off. style.css and index.html only: no box, count, rounding rule or figure changed, and app.js and copy.js are untouched. Still never run in a browser by me, so this rule is reasoned from the files, not seen.

Version 1.36 — the repeat hints now name a fraction, not just a zero

Version 1.35 made both repeat boxes take only a whole number of 2 or more, so a box reading 2.5 leaves the count with no repeat and the box flagged; but the two hints beside those boxes still listed only a 0 as the entry the page refuses, which left a fraction unexplained where it is typed. Section 2's and section 3's hints now say that a fraction is not a whole number of repeats either: a 2.5 is worked with no repeat and flagged, never rounded down to 2. index.html only — no box, count, rounding rule or figure changed, and app.js, copy.js and style.css are untouched. Known: a repeat typed as 2.0 is a whole number and is taken as 2. Still never run in a browser by me.

Version 1.35 — a repeat box holding a fraction is flagged, not quietly rounded

A stitch or row repeat box reading 2.5 was worked as a repeat of 2 with nothing said, so half a repeat was silently counted as a whole one; both repeat boxes now count only as a whole number of 2 or more, and anything else — a 0, a 2.5, letters — leaves the count worked with no repeat at all, the flag on the box and the figure agreeing. That was the one flagged box on the page with no words beside it, so section 2's cast-on and section 3's row count now open with a line saying what the repeat box will take, the way the two offset boxes already do. app.js only: no figure changed, sections 2 and 3's hints already stated the rule as a whole number of 2 or more, and index.html, copy.js and style.css are untouched. Known: a repeat typed as 2.0 is a whole number and is taken as 2. Still never run in a browser by me.

Version 1.34 — the repeat and offset boxes' rules are now written where they are met

A repeat box holding a 0, or something that is not a number at all, went red with nothing on the page saying why, while every other flagged box is explained; section 2's and section 3's hints now say the box takes a whole number of 2 or more, and that 1, or an empty box, means no repeat. The About note named only the row offset when it said an offset with a repeat of 1 is refused, which is true of the stitch offset in section 2 as well, so it now names both boxes; its opening sentence also stops calling every count “the nearest whole stitch or row”, because a row count inside a repeat rounds down. index.html only: no box, count, rounding rule or figure changed, and app.js, copy.js and style.css are untouched. Still never run in a browser by me.

Version 1.33 — section 7 now answers as soon as the page loads

Section 7 was the one section that showed nothing until you typed: its four gauge boxes were empty placeholders while sections 4, 5 and 6 arrive with example boxes filled. A now arrives at 24 stitches and 32 rows per 10 cm and B at 20 and 28 — the same example its hint already named — so the comparison is on screen from the start, 125 stitches and about 179 rows against 104 and about 157 on the 52 × 56 cm piece. The hint says the boxes arrive filled, and the About note no longer calls its hint line a figure that is not live. index.html only: no count, rounding rule or figure changed, and app.js and copy.js are untouched. Two knock-on effects worth naming: the gathered summary in section 8 now carries the A/B comparison from the moment the page loads, and version 1.15's entry calls these boxes placeholders, which is what they were until now — the figures it names are unchanged.

Version 1.32 — the worked-examples panel has its own styling

Version 1.31 folded the four worked examples into a panel but left it unstyled, so the pressable heading was the browser's default row with a bare disclosure triangle. The heading is now drawn like one of the examples it opens, with the triangle in the accent colour, a focus ring for keyboard use and a hover tint, and while the panel is open the heading joins the first example below it so the five read as one block rather than five cards. Print rules were added for the open panel: the heading prints flat, black on white, with no marker, above the four examples. style.css only — no box, figure or calculation changed, and the page has still never been run in a browser by me, so these are reasoned from the stylesheet, not seen.

Version 1.31 — the four worked examples fold away, and print opened

The four example paragraphs sat between the title and the first gauge box, so on a phone the first control was several screens down; they now live in a folded panel under the title, opened with a press on its heading, and the lead sentence above it still says what the page does. A folded panel is not laid out, so it would have been missing from paper: copy.js opens it when a print job starts and folds it back afterwards, and section 8's hint and the About note now say so. Section 4's and 5's hints say where their examples are written out. index.html and copy.js only: no box, figure or rounding rule changed, and app.js and style.css are untouched.

Version 1.30 — the yarn-weight choice is cleared when you type your own gauge

Choosing a yarn weight in section 1 filled the two “Yours” gauge boxes, but the drop-down stayed on that weight and the note under it went on saying its figures were “filled in above” even after those boxes had been typed over — so the page could name a yarn weight whose figures were no longer on screen. Editing either box now puts the drop-down back to “Choose a weight…” and replaces the note with one sentence saying why; while the boxes do still hold the weight's figures, the note is unchanged. app.js only: no count, figure or rounding rule changed, and the section 1 boxes behave exactly as before.

Version 1.29 — the older entries are now one or two sentences each

Versions 1.13 to 1.28 were written as two or three paragraphs apiece, which made this page slow to scan and long on a phone; each is now one or two sentences. Every version number, every figure and every correction note is kept — only the prose around them is cut — so the record is the same length it was, with less reading. No box, figure or calculation on the tool changed, and this version is the changelog file and nothing else. The next cut to the archive page is still to come: this page now stands at about 9 KB and will be cut at around 25 KB again.

Version 1.28 — the rounded figures now say what they measure

Section 2's cast-on and section 3's row count now end by measuring the count they have just given, so the gap between the number and the width or length asked for is visible: 114 stitches at 22 stitches per 10 cm come to 51.8 cm, not 52, and 111 with a 12 + 3 stitch repeat to 50.5 cm; 168 rows at 30 rows per 10 cm come to 56.0 cm and 162 with an 8 + 2 row repeat to 54.0 cm. The counts, the rounding rules and every other figure are those of 1.27 — only the two closing sentences were added, and index.html is untouched.

Version 1.27 — versions 1.8 to 1.12 move to the archive page

Versions 1.8 to 1.12 were copied across verbatim to changelog-archive.html, which now holds 0.1 to 1.12; this page carries 1.13 up, newest first, and both pages link to each other at the foot. The archive page's title, first heading and standing note now say 0.1 to 1.12 rather than 0.1 to 1.7. No box, figure or calculation on the tool changed.

Version 1.26 — the gather button's own list now names every result

Section 8's hint listed only five of the nine results the gather button writes out; it now names all nine in page order — the two gauges, the cast-on, the rows, the resized stitch count, the shaping steps, the cap schedule, both yarn figures and the A/B comparison — and adds the settings the block carries. Wording only: the nine labels in copy.js were re-checked against the headings and still match word for word.

Version 1.25 — the summary's label comment now says what it checked

The code comment above the gathered block's nine labels said they spanned “sections 1-8” plus two sub-headings, which counts ten and includes a section that contributes no figure; it now says the headings of sections 1 to 7 plus the two sub-headings under 5 and 6. The spot-check left open in earlier versions was finished in the same version: all nine labels and the print list, compared across section 8's hint, the About note, the gathered status sentence and the two stylesheet comments, agree. Comment only — no result changed.

Version 1.24 — the oldest entries move to the archive page

Versions 1.0 to 1.7 were copied across verbatim to changelog-archive.html, which now held 0.1 to 1.7; this page carried 1.8 up, newest first, with the archive page's title, first heading and standing note updated to match. No box, figure or calculation on the tool changed.

Version 1.23 — the last long hints now read in steps

The hints that were still one long block each — section 4's, section 5's, the cap schedule's, and the two under section 6 and one under section 7 — are now two to four short paragraphs, with every sentence copied as it stood. Paragraph breaks only: no wording, box, figure or calculation differs from 1.22.

Version 1.22 — the first three hints now read in steps

The hints of sections 1, 2 and 3, each still one block on a phone, are now short paragraphs, one per subject — the gauges and the tick box, the repeat rounding and offset, and the unit, row repeat and rounding rule. Every sentence was copied as it stood: paragraph breaks only, nothing differs from 1.21.

Version 1.21 — the two longest paragraphs now read in steps

Section 8's hint and the About note, both too long to follow on a phone, are now short paragraphs — the About note under three new sub-headings, “How the rounding works”, “What each figure leaves out” and “The summary and the printed sheet” — with every sentence kept as it stood. Layout and headings only: no result changed.

Version 1.20 — the summary's print sentence names the same things as the page

The status sentence under section 8's gather button still gave the old, shorter print list; it now names the boxes, the drop-downs, the tick box, the buttons and the footer, matching section 8's hint and the About note, and it is split so each step reads on its own. Two code comments were corrected in the same version. Wording only — no figure or calculation differs from 1.19.

Version 1.19 — the page now says what a printed sheet really carries

Section 8's hint and the About note described an older print rule that missed the tick box and did not say the hints, worked example lines and About note print dimmed to a readable grey; both now name what is left off and what prints, and section 8 adds that the tick box is the one setting a sheet cannot show by itself, so the gather button is the way to get it on paper. Wording only.

Version 1.18 — a printed sheet cannot look clean when a box was refused

The print stylesheet hid the refusal line along with the boxes, so a sheet printed while a box was refused carried results and no sign that one entry had been turned down; the message now prints in plain black on white. An empty result box is left off both sheet and screen, and headings now stay with what follows them. Stylesheet only: the printed sheet still leaves off the boxes, the drop-downs, the buttons and the footer, so it does not show what you typed.

Version 1.17 — the summary names sections as the page names them

Four of the gathered block's nine labels had drifted from the headings above their results, so a pasted summary named sections a reader could not find by that wording; each label is now the page's own heading, section number included, and a code comment says the two must be changed together. Wording only inside the gathered block: none of the nine result lines changed.

Version 1.16 — how to measure the swatch behind the gauges

Section 1's hint now says how to measure the swatch behind the gauges: knit one at least 15 cm (6 in) square in the yarn and stitch pattern of the piece, wash and rest it flat for a day, measure across the middle rather than at the cast-on or edge, and read the gauge as a rate. The About note adds that no gauge is any use until it has been measured on a washed and rested swatch. Wording only.

Version 1.15 — a worked example for the two-gauge comparison

Section 7's hint now carries the worked example its placeholders expect: the 52 × 56 cm piece from sections 2 and 3 comes to 125 stitches and about 179 rows at gauge A (24 stitches and 32 rows per 10 cm) against 104 and about 157 at gauge B (20 and 28), about 27% less knitting. These are the figures version 0.7 gave, worked out again by hand from the defaults. Wording only: the compare results are untouched.

Version 1.14 — the summary block records the settings

The gathered block in section 8 now carries the settings its figures came from — the stitch repeat with its offset and the edge stitches, the row repeat with its offset, and whether exact figures are shown — each written only when it differs from the defaults, with a note that if a box was refused the text typed in it is still shown. Wording only: none of the nine result lines changed.

Version 1.13 — a worked example for the swatch method

Section 6's swatch method now names the figures its boxes expect: a swatch 15 × 12 cm (180 cm²) that used 20 m comes to about 11.1 m per 100 cm², and the 52 × 56 cm piece from sections 2 and 3 asks for about 324 m beside the about 484 m that scaling the pattern's 400 m by the two default gauges gives. Version 0.6's entry was corrected from “about 323 m” to 324 in the same version. Wording and examples only: no box, figure or calculation changed.
